My Wrangler's AC died in this heat and I need options fast

I know everyone complains about AC in summer but this is genuinely unbearable now. My Wrangler's AC started blowing warm about ten days ago and I have been toughing it out with the windows down which is fine on the highway but absolute torture in traffic. Took it to a shop near my place and they said the compressor is gone, quoted me a number that made me laugh out loud, then when I asked for details they got vague about whether it was the compressor or the clutch. I do not trust that diagnosis at all. Has anyone had their AC compressor replaced and did it actually solve the problem or was there a leak somewhere else that kept coming back? Also does anyone know if the JK and JL have the same compressor setup because I keep getting mixed answers.
